A 'PROGRAMME of works' is being designed by Peel Ports ahead of a refurbishment of Warburton Toll Bridge near Lymm.
Residents across the town have welcomed news that the port operator will finally be repainting the town's three swing bridges, which cross the Manchester Ship Canal, at an estimated cost of £1.5 million.
Council leader Cllr Terry O'Neill confirmed it in his announcements at Monday's full council meeting at the Town Hall.
Peel Ports was unable to confirm when work on the swing bridges will commence.
But a spokeswoman for the company revealed other work is planned beforehand.
She said: "Peel Ports continues to work closely with Warrington Borough Council.
"The Manchester Ship Canal is a primary asset and over the last two years Peel Ports have invested in excess of £8 million in remedial works.
"Working in partnership, the current priority agreed with the council is the refurbishment of the Warburton Toll Bridge and a programme of works is being designed to improve asset integrity and to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
"Once this programme has been completed and delivered, Peel Ports will develop a detailed programme of works for other owned assets.
"Peel Ports remains committed to the Manchester Ship Canal and will continue to invest in improvements."
