A MAN has been released under investigation after armed police descended on Burtonwood following reports of a gunman on Tuesday morning.

Officers were called to Spurling Road at 11.15am, where a 54-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

After being questioned by detectives, he was released while enquiries continue.

It has been confirmed that an air rifle was seized by officers at the scene.

Police say the incident is believed to be isolated.

One neighbour spoke of his shock as he returned home to discover the heavy police presence in the village.

The 58-year-old, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "I was driving back from Warrington and I saw the police helicopter in the sky.

"I only live a mile away from the motorway so I often see the helicopter over there.

"When I drove up to my road the whole street was blocked off and there was police everywhere – even police dogs.

"It is unusual for Burtonwood."
