WARRINGTON Athletics Club’s young running star Harriet Knowles-Jones will run for Great Britain against European rivals later this month.
The 19-year-old will join several senior Team GB athletes at the European Athletics Team Championships, which will be held in Lille, France, on June 23-25.
The event will be Knowles-Jones’ first chance to represent Great Britain at a senior track event and she will compete in the 3000m race.
The Lymm runner has good form over that distance having smashed a Warrington Athletics Club 3000m record last month.
She ran 8mins 56.08secs at an open graded meeting in Watford, which is the fifth-best 3000m time for a British female under 20s athlete behind Zola Budd, Paula Radcliffe, Emelia Gorecka and Steph Twell.
Among the well-known names to be joining Knowles-Jones as part of Team GB will be hammer thrower Sophie Hitchon, who won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, former world championship long jump runner-up Shara Proctor and sprinters CJ Ujah and Adam Gemili.
Knowles-Jones’ selection could indicate that she is well within the thoughts of British Athletics chiefs for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
