JOE Westerman assures supporters that the Wolves squad is united despite their poor form.

The Wire have lost their past four Super League games and have conceded 158 points in the process as their prospects of making the top eight hang in the balance.

Wolves focus on the Challenge Cup this weekend as they welcome Wigan Warriors to The Halliwell Jones Stadium for a quarter-final clash on Saturday, kick off 3pm.

Fans have been critical of The Wire’s performances this season and Westerman admits he does not blame supporters for citing a lack of unity within the squad.

However, the loose forward insisted that was far from the case.

“Nobody wants to be where we are at the moment, whether that’s players or fans,” he said.

“We’ve found ourselves in the bottom four and it’s a place no club wants to be.

“From the outside looking in, it may look like we’re not a united group but I can assure the fans that we are.

“From a player’s perspective, we are all singing from the same hymn sheet and we’re focused on pulling together to get ourselves out of this mess.”

Wigan come into Saturday’s game in arguably worse form than The Wire having not won in their past seven league games.

Westerman believes a positive result in this game could change the complexion of their season.

Having twice experienced the pain of being a losing Challenge Cup finalist, with Wolves last year and Hull FC in 2013, the 27-year-old says going one better this year is driving him on.

“If we can win on Saturday, we’re in a Challenge Cup semi final and that obviously makes things look a bit better,” he said.

“It isn’t just that, though. Beating Wigan would give us so much momentum to take into a massive last five league games before the split.

“Winning on Saturday could prove the difference between us getting into the top eight and not doing.

“Whoever lifts the most will win the game, it’s as simple as that and we’ve got to make sure we do that. That’s what we’ve been focusing on this week.

“Last year at Wembley was one of the worst moments of my career. I’m in no rush to experience that again!

“Of course, having been there twice and lost, you want to go one better and it’s the same for the rest of the lads.

“We’ve got to get through to give ourselves that chance, though, and that starts with Saturday.

“Neither team is on good form, but I think it could turn out to be a really good game with the atmosphere and occasion around it.”
