WOLVES legend Lee Briers has spoken of his excitement about the return of the Touchdown Club for Wire’s Challenge Cup test against Wigan, writes Jonny Whitfield.

The famous bar, which was a key part of the old Wilderspool Stadium, is set to be brought back by Wolves when the side host their local rivals in the quarter-finals next Saturday.

Briers said: “It’s a great idea – the Touchdown Club was the hub of Wilderspool and to bring it back is a great initiative by the club.”

The former half-back spent 15 years at the helm of Warrington, including five years at Wilderspool, and has fond memories.

The 38-year-old said: “It was where you went after the game and somewhere you could have a pint with the fans.

“It was a great little bar and the fans as well as the players were all in there together after the game.”

Asked about the future of the newly-reformed Touchdown Club, Briers added: “Bringing back the old bar is a great idea and hopefully it works against Wigan.

“If it does, I think it should stand for future games to try to get as many fans involved as possible.”

The club legend is confident about his side’s chances against the Warriors next Saturday.

He said: “We want to progress to the next round of the Challenge Cup and I think we’ll win.

“To do that we need to put in a good team performance.”

Warrington and Wigan share one of rugby league’s greatest rivalries, and it was in the Challenge Cup that Briers recalled his favourite moment against the Warriors.

Briers said: “My best moment against Wigan was when we knocked them out of the cup in 2009 – we progressed to Wembley that year and also went on to lift the trophy.”

Briers scored a try and slotted five conversions and a drop goal in the sides’ semi-final meeting at Widnes to ensure the Wolves progressed to their first Wembley outing since 1990.

And Tony Smith’s men will be looking to move one step closer to a return to the capital in 2017 by defeating their derby rivals at The Halliwell Jones Stadium.

Tickets for the quarter final clash are available now.
