TWO teenagers arrested after a rape probe was launched into an attack on a 14-year-old and 16-year-old in Victoria Park have been released under investigation.

A 17-year-old and a 19-year-old were detained on suspicion of rape after police were alerted to a 'serious sexual assault' shortly after 10pm on Monday.

The two teenage boys were also arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply class A drugs.

Both suspects were taken into custody to be quizzed by detectives.

The duo have since been released pending further investigations.

Police made two further arrests during their enquiries on suspicion of drug-related activity.

Both suspects have also been released under investigation.

The victims – both young girls from Warrington – are currently being supported by specially-trained officers.

DI Paul Broadhurst said: “I would like to reassure the community that incidents like this are rare and we believe that this particular incident is isolated.

"Our enquiries are currently ongoing, although we are not looking to trace anyone else in relation to the incident at the current time.

“However, we would always urge people to follow basic safety advice when out and about - remain vigilant when walking alone especially at night, maintain an awareness of your surroundings and try and stick to well-lit areas. 

"If you see anyone acting suspiciously or have any concerns then contact police immediately.”
