THE M62 eastbound was closed for nearly six hours following a crash involving two lorries and a van this morning.
The motorway was closed between junction nine for Winwick and junction 10 for the Croft Interchange shortly before 9am.
An air ambulance landed in a field close to the carriageway and three fire crews on the scene freed one driver who was trapped inside the cab of his lorry.
The driver of one of the vehicles was taken to Wynthenshawe Hospital via air ambulance with what is believed to be serious injuries.
The accident happened at around 8.45am and the entire carriageway was closed at 9am.
A diversion was put into in place and police asked motorists to leave the M62 at junction 9.
The motorway fully reopened at around 2.30pm, with traffic expected to return to normal by around 3.30pm.
Severe congestion is still reported in the area.
