A WARRINGTON Hospital director has resigned amidst an investigation into his conduct over the avoidable deaths of 11 babies and one mum.

Roger Wilson stepped down from his post as director of human resources and organisation development at Warrington Hospital earlier this month.

Mr Wilson has previously been suspended from his position pending an investigation into his conduct when in the same role at Furness General Hospital in Barrow.

A review by the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Foundation Trust found that he had agreed an ‘irregular’ pay-off for a senior midwife at the centre of the avoidable deaths of 11 babies and one mum.

Jeanette Parkinson was ‘significantly’ overpaid in a deal that allowed her to leave her job of maternity risk manager without an investigation.

She received 14 months’ redundancy pay when she was entitled to only one month, and was also given hundreds of hours of overtime pay which had not been checked.

Mr Wilson, who joined Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust on an interim basis in February 2015 before being given the post permanently in April the same year, told the Health Service Journal in October that he ‘strongly refuted any allegation of impropriety’.

Internal investigations at the trust will continue despite his resignation.

A hospital spokesman said: “Mr Wilson was facing an internal hearing which is still in process and has not yet concluded, therefore it is not appropriate for us to comment further.

“We can however confirm that Mr Roger Wilson resigned from the trust on May 4 with immediate effect.”
