A TOP job in Warrington Borough Council's finance department is being advertised 5,000 miles away in one of the largest hotels in the world.

Bruche resident Veronica Cade was staying in Las Vegas for her 50th wedding anniversary when she spotted the job advertisement.

Preparing to tuck into breakfast at the famous Mirage hotel, Veronica looked down at her placemat, a copy of the Daily Telegraph's front page from Monday, April 14 1969.

Pride of place was an advert for Warrington Development Corporation's chief finance officer.

She later discovered that the same placemat was also being used by eateries at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport.

Veronica said: "The Mirage is quite a posh hotel, and they had it when we were having a meal at breakfast, then when we got to the airport before we were going home it was there again.

"It was quite interesting to see the wages they got in those days."

Successful applicants for the job could have expected a salary of between £3,850 and £4,950 plus enrolment into the council's pension scheme.

The advert states: "Warrington has been designated as a new town to provide housing and employment for people now living in Manchester and other towns in the south east Lancashire/north east Cheshire conurbation to assist in the relieving of overcrowding there.

"The new town will incorporate the existing count borough of Warrington and adjacent parts of the counties of Lancashire and Cheshire, and will have an eventual population of some 200,000.

"The development corporation, established under the New Towns Act 1965, will be responsible in partnership with the county borough council for the development of the new town.

"It will require a chief finance officer who should be a chartered municipal treasurer, a chartered or incorporated accountant or certified accountant or have equivalent qualifications.

"Wide and varied experience in commerce or public service is required."
