WANT to walk to school but live too far away?

You could follow in the footsteps of staff and pupils at St Paul of the Cross Catholic Primary School, Milnthorpe Road.

The Burtonwood school, who are the latest school to back our #WalkitWednesday campaign, has set up a 'Park and Stride' scheme to help cut traffic outside school to keep children safer with the help of Cllr Cathy Mitchell.

And if you are tempted to set up a similar initiative, your timing could not be better as this week is Walk to School Week.

David Boyer, assistant director for transport and environment, said: “Congestion and parking outside the school gates causes an unsafe environment for everyone and the concentration of harmful emissions especially affects children.

“If everyone who needs to drive parked a few streets away all children would benefit and walking is great way for families to keep active, stay healthy and have quality time together.

“We fully support the Warrington Guardian’s #WalkitWednesday campaign and would encourage parents and schools to join in and help make our children healthier.”

Tips for setting up your own 'Park and Stride' scheme include encouraging drivers to park a 'good distance away' in a pub or supermarket car park with the agreement of the owners and walk the last 10 minutes of the journey.

Our campaign encouraging more motorists to ditch their car at home and walk to school or work instead has been running throughout the Spring.
