A MAN has been charged with the murder of a former Royal Navy officer who was run over in his own car as he tried to stop thieves from stealing it.
Ryan Gibbons, of Steven Court, Chorlton, will appear at Manchester Magistrates' Court tomorrow, Saturday, in connection with the killing of Mike Samwell who is understood to have worked as a programme manager for engineering firm Atkins in Risley.
The 29-year-old has been remanded in custody and faces charges of murder, burglary and aggravated TWOC (taking a vehicle without the owner's consent).
Mike Samwell, 35, was woken by intruders on Sunday at 3am as he slept upstairs at his home in Chorlton with wife Jessica.
As he tried to stop raiders from stealing his car he was run over.
He was taken to hospital but died around an hour later.
A 15-year-old boy from South Manchester has been bailed subject to ongoing enquiries after being arrested of suspicion of murder and burglary.
Two more men, aged 20 and 21, have also been bailed with further enquiries taking place after being arrested in connection with the same two charges.
