THE Famous King and Queen is unveiled its new look last night, Thursday, after a 10-day renovation.

It is the first major investment by Greene King brewery in the Padgate pub in more than 40 years.

But licensee Julie Adamson and her partner Trevor Fox have reassured their regulars that the 170-year-old tavern will retain its traditional feel.

Changes include a disabled toilet where the kitchen used to be and all new furniture, carpets and curtains as well as new TVs.

Julie, a former Penketh High pupil, said: “It’s a massive refurbishment. The pub’s never been touched since the 70s and this is a full makeover.

“It’s been done for our customers who are very loyal and we can’t wait for them to see it. The people and the sense of community we have here is what makes the pub special.”

Julie and her partner Trevor, who grew up in Kingsway North, will also be putting up old pictures of Warrington, including a photo of Greenall’s brewery from 1896, up on the walls, so people can reminisce about the town through the years.

The 52-year-old added: “It’s our heritage and with the way the town is changing it is good to have a reminder of that. We’ll be keeping the pub traditional. I think it’s one of the only traditional pubs left in Warrington.”

The pub used to be called the King and Queen Hotel and it still has the old coach houses at the back. But little is known about the building’s history.
