E-COMMERCE giant Amazon has announced the creation of 1,200 permanent jobs at the Omega site in Warrington.

Job hunters will be able to apply for a range of different roles including operations managers, engineers, HR and IT specialists later this year.

The Warrington site, which is expected to be in operation from autumn, is one of four new packing warehouses that Amazon will open in 2017.

It is the latest big name to move onto the land.

Stefano Perego, Amazon’s director of UK customer fulfilment, said: “We are thrilled to begin recruitment for 1,200 new permanent roles in Warrington with competitive wages and comprehensive benefits starting on day one."

Professor Steven Broomhead, chairman of Warrington & Co, said: “I warmly welcome Amazon’s considerable investment into the Omega site.

“The arrival of Amazon compliments the other recognised brands which are occupying Omega which has generated nearly 7,000 new jobs for Warrington and the surrounding areas.

“This move by a huge multinational firm shows how much confidence there is in the Warrington economy.”

David Mowat, Warrington South MP, also welcomed the news.

He said: “Warrington was recently ranked as the number two town in the country in which to do business, so it’s no surprise that a major international organisation is keen to do business here and employ local people.

"It shows that, with strong, stable leadership, our town can continue to prosper in the coming years.

"Our unemployment rate has more than halved since 2010 and this looks set to continue."

All permanent Amazon fulfilment centre employees start on £7.65 an hour or higher.

This increases over the first two years of employment when all employees earn £8.15 an hour or more.

All of the permanent employees working in our fulfilment centres also receive stock grants.

Employees are also offered a benefits package including private medical insurance, life assurance, income protection, subsidised meals and an employee discount.

Amazon also runs Career Choice which provides employees funding for adult education.

The Warrington site will be equipped with advanced Amazon robotics technology.

The robots slide under a tower of shelves where products are stowed, lift it and move it through the fulfilment centre.
