A FAMILY have been left heartbroken following the death of their 'very precious daughter' two days before her 13th birthday.

Police were called to an address in Bewsey following 'reports of concern for the safety' of a 12-year-old girl at 2.50am on Saturday.

Jessica Scatterson, who would have celebrated turning 13 on Monday, was found unconscious and taken to Warrington Hospital but sadly died.

On Monday, residents turned out in force at Dallam playing fields and Eagle Sports Club, as well as in Leigh, to release hundreds of balloons up into the sky in tribute to the Penketh High School pupil.

In a joint statement from the family and Penketh High School, principal Ben Dunne said Jessica's dad Chris is 'grateful to everyone who has sent condolences and shown support' following her tragic death.

He added: "Penketh High School is working closely with Chris and the family and we are all acutely aware of growing speculation on social media following this very personal loss.

"On behalf of the family and the school I would like to request that all parents and wider members of the public are sensitive to the impact this is having at this distressing time.

"The family has requested the time and privacy to grieve the death of a very precious daughter."

Cheshire Police confirmed they are currently working with the family to offer support.

DI Karen Jaundrill said: "Our thoughts are with the family at such a difficult time and they are currently being supported by specialist officers.

"We are working closely with the school and other partner agencies to provide support to any children who may have been affected."

There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and a file is being prepared for the coroner.
