MORE than 90 per cent of children in Warrington have been offered a place at their first-choice primary school.

But 54 children have failed to secure a spot at any of their preferred schools with some now facing a fight through the appeals process.

Many parents will be breathing a sigh of relief after it was revealed 2,328 school starters - out of 2,540 - will be able to attend their preferred choice in September.

This equates to 92 per cent of youngsters – an increase on last year’s figure which was 90.5 per cent.

Five per cent of those who applied have been offered their second choice which equates to 122 school starters – a drop on last year’s figure by 0.5 per cent.

Thirty-six children have been handed a place at their third-choice school.

This figure has also dropped from 2016 by 0.5 per cent.

But two per cent of school starters have missed out on a spot at any of their preferred choices for primary education.

This figure has dropped in comparison to 2016 by 0.5 percent when 63 children were told they had failed to secure one of their preferred choices.

Executive board member for children’s services Cllr Jean Carter said: “As Warrington continues to grow and thrive, it’s vital we invest in the future success of our borough.

"That means investing in our children.

"Meeting the needs of young people and their families when it comes to school choices is an important part of that.

“I’m delighted that the number of children in Warrington being offered their first choice has increased this year.

"Gaining a place at the right primary school can, of course, get children’s education off to the best possible start.

"That’s why it’s great news for our borough when we are able to accommodate a high number of first preferences.”

Parents whose children are due to start primary school in September are expected to receive the news via letter or email today, Tuesday.
