AN elderly man in his 80s has been left shaken after he tried to stop a thief as part of a distraction theft scam.

Officers have released a CCTV image of two women they would like to speak following the incident in the town centre at 4.20pm on March 27.

Police are investigating after the elderly couple withdrew a large amount of cash from Lloyds Bank in Golden Square Shopping Centre.

The couple left the bank to go shopping but were followed by two women.

While in Marks and Spencer one of the women stole the cash from a bag.

The pensioner noticed the cash had been taken and attempted to chase one of the women following her to Warrington Central train station, where the woman got into a taxi and left the scene.

The first woman is described as white, approximately 5ft 2ins, of slim build with short light hair.

The woman had an Eastern European accent and was wearing a white cotton hat, a dark jacket and dark trousers.

The second woman is described as white, of stocky build and tall.

She had grey hair and was wearing black glasses and a black bobble hat.

Investigating officer PC Phil Collier said: “We are currently following a number of enquiries in relation to this incident and I’m keen to speak to anyone who recognises the women in the CCTV image.

“I’m also keen to trace the taxi driver who collected the women from the taxi rank at Warrington Central Station shortly after 4.30pm on March 27.

“The victims in this case have been left upset and shaken as a result of the incident and I urge anyone with any information to contact the team here at Warrington.”
