TWO retractable canopies will be installed on a pub terrace overlooking Bridgewater Canal after blueprints were approved by the council.

The London Bridge, which is marginally situated in Appleton, confirmed the area will be monitored by CCTV cameras and regular staff checks to ensure it remains 'safe' for punters.

The authority approved applicant JW Lees' plans for the two-storey London Road site on March 28.

The design and access statement, submitted by the application agent, confirmed JW Lees will opt for two timber-framed canopies.

It said: "We feel that the client's intentions are not detrimental to the character of the building, or the surroundings, but will enhance the external aspect overlooking the canal.

"The client will ensure that the use of the unit will be in a safe manner for all, with the addition of CCTV cameras.

"The development will also have the addition of natural surveillance through regular visits by the bar staff.

"The client recognises the importance of biodiversity conservation and supports it through their values, performance and communication and engagement.

"Protecting the safety and health of people and the environment is a JW Lees core value.

"Therefore, our client strives to design their facilities and conduct themselves in their operations to avoid adverse impacts to human health and to operate in an environmentally sound, reliable and efficient manner.

"Our client strives to avoid or minimise significant risks and impacts their projects and operations may pose to sensitive species, habitats and ecosystems."

The decision comes after Piccolino, which is also on London Road, was forced to remove a retractable roof from its listed site after it was installed without permission.

The roof – featuring two parasols – was pulled down just over a month ago following a lengthy battle with the council and visit from the Planning Inspectorate.

It has since opened its new open-air terrace.
