TRAVELLERS have unlawfully set up camp at a number of sites across the borough in the past week.

Over the weekend, three caravans made their way onto Sainsbury's, on Church Street, before vacating the land.

A Sainsbury’s spokesman responded following concerns from customers.

He said: “We can confirm the issue has been resolved.”

An encampment comprising 12 caravans and associated vehicles arrived onto Dallam Lane on Saturday.

On Sunday, three caravans and three associated vehicles arrived onto Tesco, on Winwick Road, before a group turned up at Chadwick House at Birchwood Park.

One caravan, a motorhome and associated vehicles made their way onto Winwick's Hermitage Green development on Monday.

The Cheshire and Warrington Traveller team has issued section 77 notices to the groups at Chadwick House and Hermitage Green ordering them to leave by noon tomorrow, Thursday.

The council has almost £2 million set aside to fund a transit camp for travellers but possible sites have remained a closely-guarded secret.

A shortlist potential locations is due to be drawn up this summer.

The planning for travellers task group will identify a number of sites before one is eventually put forward and required to go through the relevant processes, including planning and executive board approval.
