Leigh 29 Warrington 39

WARRINGTON had to rely on a late comeback to secure victory in a topsy-truvy game against relegation-threatened Leigh.

Tom Arnold got the visitors on the board early by squeezing over in the corner before the winger scythed through the home defence to double his tally, with Luke Gilooly converting.

Gilooly added a penalty before Leigh flexed their muscles with two tries through Alex Leadbetter and Dan Hunter to reduce Warrington’s lead to just three points.

However, Warrington regained their composure and Max Arnold dazzled the defence before handing on for Arnold to complete his treble.

Leigh flew out of the traps in the second half and scored 17 points without reply to take a nine-point lead.

Jimmy Wilkinson scored twice, Elliot Ryan and Rob Drake added conversions while Drake also kicked a penalty to give the strugglers the initiative.

It looked as if the hosts would record a vital win, but Andy Roberts’ side had other ideas.

With 15 minutes left, Pat Roberts’ well-judged kick led to a try for brother Nick, with Gilooly adding the extras.

After forcing a line-out within sight of the Leigh line, the ball then found its way for the unmarked Matt Gregory to score and edge Warrington ahead again.

Another line-out led to the visitors’ final try, with Ben Hockenhull using the blind side well and finding the speed to cross the line.

With three games of the North One West season remaining, Warrington are sixth and welcome Vale of Lune to Walton Lea Road on Saturday, kick off 3pm.
