THIS is the moment members of the public enjoyed a stroll on the M6 prior to the opening of the motorway – without a traffic jam in sight.

Steven Dandy sent in this photo to the Warrington Guardian which is believed to have been captured by his granddad Ronald around junction 21 in the 1960s.

He said: “My family have lived on Rixton Moss for six generations since it was originally turned into farmland from peat bogs.

“Their farmland is on Brook Lane which runs parallel to the M6.

“My granddad would have taken these photos as the M6 and Thelwall Viaduct were originally being built.

“My uncle has been transferring old family slides into digital format and these photos were amongst about 350 family pictures sent to me recently after my gran died at the age of 97 in January.

“I found the photo of the people walking around on the M6 amazing especially as these days the volume of traffic is phenomenal.”
