A MINUTE'S silence will be held on the steps of Warrington Town Hall today, Thursday, to remember the victims and pay tribute to those affected by the terrorist attack in London.

The silence will be observed at 2.30pm after four people died and 40 people were injured in the terror attack near to the Houses of Parliament yesterday, Wednesday.

The Mayor of Warrington, Cllr Faisal Rashid has expressed his condolences for the victims.

He said: “This senseless attack is an attack on all of us and everything we stand for.

"I am sure I speak on behalf of all of the people of Warrington in sending our thoughts and prayers to all those whose lives have been affected by this atrocity.

“This week we commemorated 24 years since the IRA bombing in Warrington, remembering those who lost their lives and drawing strength from the response of our communities that followed.

"Our own experience shows that by standing and working together we will always be stronger than those who attempt to undermine our democratic values and principles.”

The Town Hall, cenotaph and Stockton Heath Police Station flags are at half-mast.

At 9.33am, officers in Cheshire Police observed a one minute’s silence, paying their respect to victims and those affected.

Warrington North MP Helen Jones spoke to Wire FM earlier today after she was put on lockdown in the chamber of the House of Commons.

She said: "We saw the best and the worst of human nature.

"We saw the worst in the attack but then there were people stopping on Westminster Bridge to help the injured.

"Staff from St Thomas' Hospital ran to the bridge.

"They - at the time - didn't know whether there was still any danger.

"We saw the paramedics and the police coming in and I think what they showed – despite these things happening – most people, the vast majority of people are perfectly nice, decent people and that's something to hold on to at times like this."

Warrington Islamic Association has issued a statement following the attack.

It said: "We are shocked and saddened by the incident at Westminster.

"We condemn this attack and, while it is still too early to speculate on the motives, our thoughts and prayers are for the victims and those affected.

"We pay tribute too, to the police and emergency services, who handled this with bravery.

"The Palace of Westminster is the centre of our democracy and we must all ensure that it continues to serve our country and its people with integrity, safety and security."
