THE TOWN’s new Member of Youth Parliament is set to be named next week.

Five teens from around Warrington are in the running for the post and with young people having been casting votes over the last few weeks, results will be announced on Thursday evening.

Standing for the role of MYP are Freya Brocklebank, Luke Corbishley, Tom Bedworth, Grace Lillie Gage and Imogen Walsh.

Woolston resident Tom, 17, had his interest in politics sparked by the EU referendum and the US presidential elections.

The Priestley College student said: "For a while I've wanted to go into politics because of everything that's been going on with the EU referendum and things over in America.

"That got me interested politics so I started studying it and it’s interested me.

"A lot of younger people aren't really interested in politics anymore because they're disillusioned with it and don't really see the point.

"I feel that's quite wrong, because in the future the politicians will be this generation.

"If people don't really have an interest in it then someone needs to get out there and be a voice for them."

Tom, of Lawson Close, is campaigning on the issues of equality, mental health and transport.

He said: "There are three main issues that I want to address.

"One is equality - whether that's giving everyone the same opportunity to go into the workplace or removing the stigma around doing an apprenticeship rather than a university degree.

"Another is mental health, because one in four teenagers experience some form of mental health issue and it should be targeted in the same way that a physical illness would be.

"The third is transport - transport is a big issue for a lot of young people in Warrington, whether it's the prices of bus fares going up or bus services being at the wrong times for them."

Campaign videos from all of the MYP candidates are available to view on the Warrington Borough Council website.
