MUSIC has always played an instrumental part in the life of The Voice UK contestant Max Vickers.

From a young age the former Bridgewater High School pupil would listen to his mum Sally playing David Bowie on repeat or ‘old school 80s rock music’ which was a firm favourite with his dad Bob.

At 16, he decided to master playing the guitar for a performance of Spring Awakening at Priestley College – the rest is history.

The 24-year-old said: “I have always liked to express myself and I have done this through dance, acting, art.

“I used to paint a lot when I did an art foundation course at Priestley College.

“I was in college when I realised what I wanted to do which was playing the guitar and songwriting.”

During his early years, Max moved around Warrington living in Lymm, Grappenhall and Stockton Heath.

He attended Ravenbank Primary School in Lymm before attending

Lymm High School for his first year in secondary education before moving to Bridgewater High School after his family relocated to Stockton Heath.

He said: “At Bridgewater I did a performing arts course and I found that it was really good and creative.

“In most of my lessons I was in detention and I struggled a bit.

“But with performing arts it helped me to come out of my shell and I was not as a distracted as I was enjoying it.”

Competing in a talent show was not something Max had thought about until he heard about The Voice UK scouts attending an open mic night at The Mulberry Tree in Stockton Heath.

So Max along with roommate Mo Adeniran and now fellow contestant Nadine McGhee decided to check it out.

“They asked us to get in touch and now we are in the final 12,” said Max.

“There were 60,000 people who auditioned and three of us were discovered in The Mulberry Tree in Stockton Heath. It’s bizarre.”

Since getting through to the quarter-finals on the TV series, Max has described his experience as a ‘rollercoaster’.

He said: “It’s very go go go so I’ve not had the chance to process it really.

“A soon as I got through I had to start working on my next song.

“One day I’m extremely confident and the next day my stomach will be in knots.

“It’s about trying to find a balance.”

Max will compete in this Saturday’s episode for a spot in the semi-finals for Team Gavin Rossdale.

He said: “Gavin is a brilliant coach. He just wants to help.”
