AN elderly couple was targeted as part of a scam in operation in Culcheth this weekend.

Police have confirmed they are investigating after two rogue traders visited the couple's home on Saturday.

Officers say the two men offered to clean the gutter on the property for £20.

After agreeing to the work the men have claimed a number of tiles on the roof were loose.

This was to cost the couple more than £300 to fix according to the two men.

A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: "Thankfully family members have attended the address while the males were present and sent them on their way.

"A family member who is a qualified roofer confirmed no work needed doing to their roof.

"Rogue traders come to your door with all sorts of reasons why you need work doing.

"Often they can quote you one low price to do the work but this quickly goes up once the work has been completed."

Following the incident, Cheshire Police have issued advice to the public about the best ways to deal with an unexpected caller.

Residents are advised to always ask for identification badges and to keep doors locked when talking to strangers.

A spokesman added: "Identity cards can be faked. You can call the company to verify their identity if you are unsure.

"Never let people try to persuade you to let them into your home even if they are asking for help as they may not be genuine.

"If someone is persistent, ask them to call at another time and arrange for a friend or family member to be with you.

“Don’t feel embarrassed - genuine callers expect you to be careful

"Never agree to pay for goods or give money to strangers who arrive at your door and don’t keep large amounts of money in your home."
