COMMUTERS have been warned to expect delays on the roads and railways on Monday as a major train strike hits services across the north.

Northern rail will run just forty per cent of its normal service, with very few trains before 7am or after 7pm.

Drivers have been warned the roads will be busy as more people travel to work by car. Trains across the network are expected to be very crowded.

There will be just one train an hour from Warrington Central to Manchester Oxford Road, with the first train leaving at 8.02am.

There will be no Northern trains between Warrington and Liverpool but services operated by East Midlands and TransPennine Express will still be running.

The strike has been called by the RMT union in opposition to plans to bring in more trains operated by drivers only.

The proposals would mean a guard is no longer needed to open and close train doors.

Bus replacement services will be running on some routes and Northern has drafted in an extra 300 rail replacement buses.

Customers will be able to use their tickets on Arriva bus services and other train services including Arriva Trains Wales, C2C, Chiltern, Cross Country, TransPennine Express, Grand Central, Greater Anglia, Great Western Railway, Hull Trains, Scotrail, Virgin Trains East Coast and Virgin Trains West Coast.

Merseyrail will also be running a reduced service on Monday due to industrial action.

Northern expects a normal service to resume on Tuesday.
