A HIGH-TECH solution could be on the way to help drivers know where the traffic jams are in Warrington and how long they might last.

The council has been given a £300,000 grant from Government in a bid to tackle congestion in the town.

The scheme promises to provide real-time information for drivers via apps and websites on the cause of delays and how long a journey may take.

It will also give a Bluetooth link between drivers and the council's road management system which will allow the council to better track where traffic is building up and change the priorities at traffic lights at key junctions in an attempt to mitigate delays.

Cllr Hans Mundry, executive board member for transport, said: “We’re delighted to have secured this money for another one of our innovative and forward-thinking schemes.

"We hope this will help make journey times more efficient and more predictable, and address some of the current problems of traffic emissions caused by queuing.

“We also hope the scheme will boost the borough’s economy, benefiting businesses with fuel and travel time savings.”

The project will provide real-time information to businesses and the public via on-street information displays, interactive web pages, social media and an innovative local mobile phone app for drivers and bus travellers.

The app will provide information on the causes of any delays and also provide likely journey times, thus allowing them to make an informed decision on their journey plans.

Work is under way to deliver the project by March 2018. The council received the joint highest grant of any bid.
