INVESTIGATIONS continue after a car came off the M62 leaving a woman in a critical condition.

Merseyside Police’s roads policing unit are issuing a second appeal for information following the crash yesterday, Wednesday, on the westbound motorway between junction eight at Burtonwood and junction seven at Rainhill.

The incident happened when a black Vauxhall Corsa left the carriageway and collided with a tree.

An ambulance and three rapid response teams were called to the scene at 7.05am.

One woman, who was driving the Vauxhall Corsa, was taken to Aintree Hospital after she was found unconscious at the scene.

Police have confirmed she remains in a critical condition.

Highways England closed the westbound carriageway between junction nine and junction seven at 8.30am, with queues stretching back to junction 10 at Croft.

The closure was put in place to allow police investigations to take place, but one lane reopened at 1pm.

All remaining lanes were subsequently reopened in the afternoon.

A diversion was set up, taking motorists on to Burtonwood Road, Whittle Avenue and the A57 before rejoining the M62 at junction seven.

Anyone with information should contact the Merseyside Police roads policing team on 0151 777 5747.
