THE M62 was closed for four-and-a-half hours after a 'serious' crash this morning.

An ambulance and three rapid response teams were called to the scene at 7.05am after a car came off the westbound carriageway and hit a tree.

One woman has been taken to Aintree Hospital after she was found unconscious at the scene, between junction eight at Burtonwood and junction seven at Rainhill.

Highways England closed the whole westbound carriageway between junction nine and junction seven at 8.30am, with queues stretching back to junction 10 at Croft.

The closure was put in place to allow police investigations to take place, but one lane reopened at 1pm.

All remaining lanes have subsequently reopened.

A diversion was set up, taking motorists on to Burtonwood Road, Whittle Avenue and the A57 before rejoining the M62 at junction seven.

Merseyside Police’s roads policing unit are appealing for information following the incident.
