WORK on the town’s flood defences is continuing a year on from storms leaving parts of Warrington underwater.

Storm Eva hit Warrington on Boxing Day 2015, leaving parts of town including Latchford Locks, Longford, Sankey Valley Park, Woolston Park, Lymm, Croft and Burtonwood flooded.

A 100m section of Cromwell Avenue between Europa Boulevard and Sankey Brook was hit with 150mm of flood water, with Environment Agency flood defences protecting 119 properties.

Today, work on £34m of improved defences on the Mersey is continuing – an estimated 2,400 properties will benefit from the extra four-and-a-half miles of protection against flooding once completed.

Mark Garratt from the Environment Agency said: “We’ve worked closely with partners on the Warrington flood defence scheme to protect more homes from the risk of flooding.

“It’s really important that if you haven’t already you spend a few minutes to check whether your homes or business is at risk – if it is there are some simple steps you can take to become more resilient.

“Measures such as preparing a kit of essential items and storing important documents like passports in a safe place can go a long way in an emergency situation.

“It’s quick and simple to check your flood risk online and sign up for free flood alerts and warnings.”
