A 24-YEAR-old man who travelled to Creamfields Festival in Daresbury from his home in Kent has been jailed for trying to sneak class A drugs into the event.

Shane Bayliss of Byron Avenue in Margate pleaded guilty to possessing £300 worth of cocaine, which he intended to sell to other festivalgoers, at Chester Crown Court last Tuesday.

Bayliss was stopped by police on August 25 after a drugs dog singled him out when he tried to enter the event through the south gate.

Prosecuting, Mandy Nepal said: “It was at 7.20pm. An officer spoke to the defendant and asked if he had any illegal drugs.

“He showed them to the officer, concealed in a Lynx deodorant roll and a flashlight torch which he informed the officer had cocaine concealed within it.

“The defendant’s phone was analysed, there were two conversations. The first is about the supply of drugs. The second is about the defendant’s reluctance about the position he has placed himself in.”

Bayliss was carrying 30 packets of cocaine, which totalled 4.63 grams at 60 per cent purity.

Defending, Jeremy Rawson said: “He has been cooperative throughout.

He has no related drug conviction and when challenged by the officers when going into Creamfields he admitted he had drugs in his possession.

“He has a wide range of friends who are very supportive of him and a large number of them travelled here with him today.”

Judge William Davis, sentencing, said: “It’s not made any better that you were proposing to do this at a music festival that many young people were going to.

“Parents see their children set off knowing that there is a risk of drugs. You lead an otherwise sensible and decent life but I can’t avoid giving you a custodial sentence.

“I’m going to reduce that sentence quite significantly.”

Bayliss was jailed for two years and will be released on license after serving half his sentence.
