FAITH groups in the town will 'stand together and unite against hate' at a special event on February 1.

Mayor Cllr Faisal Rashid will host 'Breaking the Barriers' at the Parr Hall after the turn of the year.

It will explore the common theme of humanity running through each religion, while calling on people of all faiths to join forces.

Residents will get the chance to listen to a range of speakers, watch a drama production based on religious stories from different faiths and enjoy performances from a choir and brass band.

Cllr Rashid (LAB – Chapelford and Old Hall), who is Warrington's first Asian mayor, said: "Breaking the Barriers will be a very special event, which will send out a powerful message across Warrington and beyond.

"The event is open to all ages and also to families – as it will provide great learning for children.

"It's never been more important that we stand together and celebrate our differences, as well as the many things we all share in common.

"This event will serve as symbol of peace, friendship and unity between people of all faiths and of no faith.

"The event will also raise awareness about hate crime, such an important issue to address in the current climate.

"It will give us the chance to unite against hate and intolerance in all its forms – whether it is based upon race, religion, nationality, sexual orientation or disability.

"The core theme for this event is humanity, which is crucial, because I believe that if we all start by recognising and celebrating each other's humanity, the rest will follow.

"Please join us at the event and help us send out these important messages of unity."

The free event begins at 7pm.
