PLANS to erect advertising hoardings on a controversial tyre wall in Howley have been turned down by councillors.

Patrick Moran was looking to erect two boards on the corner of Kingsway Bridge.

They were to have sat on top of the controversial wall which has angered residents since it was installed.

The tyres were deemed to be legal by Government experts and cannot be removed.

However the bid to put up the two 6m by 3m advertising boards was up before councillors at their meeting yesterday, Wednesday.

Despite council planners recommending that the scheme be approved, the councillors turned it down on the grounds of visual amenity.

Cllr Jean Flaherty (LAB – Fairfield and Howley) said: "The Fairfield and Howley ward already has a significant amount of unnecessary street signage and complaints are regularly received from residents about these unsightly additions to our area.

"In addition and perhaps more seriously, on the roundabout where this is suggested, there has already been a fatal accident.

"Mr Moran previously considered that it would be acceptable to the residents of Fairfield and Howley for him to create an organised dump of tyres upon which he was selling advertising space. In this area, some of these tyres remain in place."
