HELP a pet in need this Christmas by putting one extra treat in your shopping basket this December.

The Warrington Guardian has joined forces with Warrington Animal Welfare (WAW) to launch a pet appeal to make sure abandoned and unwanted animals enjoy the Christmas they deserve.

Caroline Tebbs, centre manager, knows only too well the heart-breaking journey some of the animals have experienced during their lives before finding a safe refuge with WAW.

As they desperately wait to find a permanent home, Caroline has urged the public to give generously to help the charity which is a lifeline for many of these animals.

She said: “It’s not their fault they are here and some animals have been here a long time.

“As it’s Christmas and the season of giving, let’s not forget the pets that are here.

“How many people buy their pets a present at Christmas? And these animals have no one to love them other than the staff and volunteers at WAW.

“They deserve a Christmas too.

“After Christmas it can be a busy time of year for us as some people discover they can no longer care for pets which were bought as presents.

“Any donations would be appreciated so we can continue to help them.”
WAW was set up in 1983 and since then the team, which mainly comprises of volunteers, has worked to raise awareness of the importance of neutering and microchipping and provide low cost neutering for pets whose owners are on benefits or a low income.

The charity also offers help and assistance to rehome unwanted pets.
The first rescue centre was opened in 2013 and throughout the years the charity has rehomed many animals.

Pet food, toys and fleece blankets to be used as bedding would be welcomed by the charity based on Slutchers Lane.

Cleaning products including dog mess bags are also in low supply.

Caroline added: “Every year we can’t believe how generous people are but more donations are still needed.

“We are always on the hunt for food especially cat food.

“We have got 24 cat pens and at maximum we can have upwards of 70 cats in here especially in kitten season.

“Our need for cat food is immense.”

Donations can be dropped off at the Warrington Guardian office on Centre Park on Cygnet Court from Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm or the WAW base on Slutchers Lane from Monday to Sunday from 12pm to 4pm.
