A REFUGEE charity set up in Appleton Thorn last year has once again helped to send another huge supply of aid to Syrian refugees.

Refugee Aid NW, currently based in Lostock Gralam near Northwich, worked alongside other charities last Saturday, November 19, to load a 44ft container of essentials donated from across the UK.

The organisation has grown into a registered charity since Appleton Thorn resident Nora Carlin set up a Facebook group on September 3 last year.

She felt compelled to do something following the shocking image of a Syrian three-year-old’s lifeless body on a Turkish beach.

Nora said: “That photo tipped me over the edge. I set up a group on Facebook that night and when I got up the next morning I just couldn’t believe the response.

“I literally thought I was going to get half a dozen bin bags but within 24 hours that went completely out of the window.

“We realised that between all the charities in the area we could get containers out faster and we are doing.

“As you can see we could do with bigger premises again.”

Refugee Aid NW relocated to a property on Museum Street in Warrington in February, and then to Lostock Gralam in July.

As the constant bombings in cities like Aleppo continue, the charity has managed to attract aid which will help civilians in the immediate aftermath of attacks.

Su Williams, a volunteer from Lymm, said: “We are sending a lot of crutches because of the bombings on hospitals.

“It’s just atrocious. For the families it’s just so sad.”

Due to the volume and scale of items that are sent in to them, the charity has decided it will open a shop to sell items to raise money for their cause.

Donations that are judged not to be as vital as other items have also been given to other charities like YMCA and the Rucksack Project.
