LABOUR members braved the freezing weather to gather support on a petition calling for the NHS to be supplied with more resources on Saturday, November 26.

Members from Warrington South constituency Labour Party (CLP), as well as several from Warrington North, took part in the party's national day of action on the theme of 'caring for the NHS'.

Leaflets were handed out at Market Gate and signatures collected on Labour's petition asking for more resources for the NHS.

More than 300 signatures were collected throughout the day.

Cllr Steve Wright, chairman of Warrington South CLP, said: "It was great to see so many of our members, both long-standing and new, out with us showing their passionate support for the NHS.

"Even though it was bitterly cold, we were warmly received by the Warrington public, showing just how much people in the town value their NHS.

"In particular, we wanted to draw attention to the potential threat to whole time cover in the A&E department at Warrington Hospital, which could potentially lose night-time opening following the forthcoming Government consultation.

"It is ridiculous that such a large town, with a quarter of a million residents, could lose access to this important service, leaving Warrington people very vulnerable at night.

"We are also very concerned about the crisis in social care provision caused by Tory cuts, which is leading to bed-blocking and severe strain on our hospital services."

A similar event was held in Lymm a week earlier, with more than 80 signatures collected.
