WAITING at the end of the aisle for his future wife, James Mcdowall could hardly believe his luck that he was finally going to marry the love of his life.

But just under three years later the 38-year-old will have to stand in the same spot where he said ‘I do’ at Joseph’s Church in Penketh as he bids a final farewell to his wife Oksana following a short battle with cancer.

“I have been dreading it,” said James, who works as a carer for adults with mental health problems and learning disabilities.

“It was the happiest day of our lives when we got married and now I have to say goodbye at the same place.”

The couple, who lived together in Penketh, first set eyes on each other ten years ago while volunteering for HCPT – a charity which provides holidays for disabled and disadvantaged children and adults.

Oksana, who grew up in Bolton, and James quickly fell in love and were inseparable ever since.

The couple had planned to start a family together but now James faces life without the woman he loves.

Following a short battle with bowl cancer, 35-year-old Oksana died at St Rocco’s Hospice on Tuesday, November 15, surrounded by loved ones.

“It has all just come as a complete shock,” said James, who grew up in Latchford.

“I knew it was serious straightaway.

“She was brave throughout the fight.

“She put up a battle as best she could but because of the nature of the disease she could not fight anymore.

“I am just glad she is no longer suffering.”

Since her death, James has vowed to give Oksana, who volunteered as a leader at The 15th Warrington West Beavers in Penketh, the send-off she deserves.

He said: “She was only small but she had a big heart.

“She was a massive personality who would do anything for anyone.”
