WARRINGTON Borough Council chief executive Steven Broomhead says that the town ‘deserves better’ than its new Post Office branch after it was moved to the back of WH Smiths.

The town centre post office was moved from the Old Market Place site it had stood at for decades this week, closing its doors for the final time on Wednesday evening.

Thursday morning saw the opening of the new branch in the rear of WH Smiths in Golden Square Shopping Centre.

But Warrington Borough Council chief executive Steven Broomhead says his ‘worst fears’ have been realised over the move, which he was a vocal opponent to.

Mr Broomhead said: “My worst fears on this have materialised – I visited and had to rattle through narrow aisles between WH Smith merchandise shelves to reach our Crown Post Office.

“I witnessed a lady with twins in a double buggy unable to get through.

“The space at the back of the shop is cramped with no seating for our older citizens and the whole design looks like an afterthought.

“I feel sorry for the hardworking staff who have to endure this – the town deserves better than this.”
