A FAMILY are attempting to raise £50,000 in order to fund lifesaving treatment for their gran.

Sue Jones was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer earlier this year, with a potential lifesaving treatment currently unavailable on the NHS.

The 65-year-old grandma is still hoping to have immunotherapy, a treatment available only from specialist clinics at a cost of £50,000.

Birchwood resident Sue was first diagnosed with lung cancer two years ago, having part of a lung removed and undergoing four months of chemotherapy.

But she found out in August that the cancer had returned and spread to both of her lung.

Daughter Nicola Hewitt said: “The nurse said that the cancer was more or less gone but it has come back again in both lungs now.

“The only other treatment is to try chemotherapy again, but it didn’t get rid of it the first time around.

“It’s about my mum’s quality of her life, which she will not get if she’s constantly on chemotherapy, and she’s only small so she didn’t react well to it last time.”

Sue, who lives in Keyes Close and formerly worked at Gala Bingo in Cockhedge Shopping Centre, was inspired by a similar fundraising mission by Emmerdale actress Leah Bracknell.

Family and friends are hoping to raise the total through events including a sponsored walk.

Nicola added: “We’re trying to organise fundraising events including a sponsored 20-mile walk and a few bits like that but it’s hard when you’re not raising for a particular charity and you’re just raising for one person, so it’s a bit of a struggle.

“My mum set up the fundraising page but has been a bit dismissive over whether we can do it as we obviously haven’t got that long to try and raise the money.”
