UKIP has called a by-election to fill a position on Burtonwood and Westbrook Parish Council following the resignation of a Labour councillor.

Culcheth Glazebury and Croft borough councillor Jan Davidson has stepped down from her role covering the Burtonwood ward.

Cllr Davidson said she leaves the area in 'a strong position'.

She added: "I, as borough councillor for Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft, try to attend each parish council and there are big issues, which are very time-consuming – so to resign seemed the best course of action."

Among the issues Cllr Davidson is vowing to assist residents with is HS2.

The deadline to submit by-election documents to Warrington Borough Council was 5pm on Monday and the authority has confirmed it received a 'valid request' for an election to be held to fill the vacancy.

The election, which will be held on December 8, is estimated to cost around £5,000.

It will be recharged to the parish council.

Notice of the election will go up on November 3, with the nominations deadline set for 4pm on November 11.

Chairman of UKIP's Warrington branch Trevor Nicholls said he is 'always confident' when his party is involved in elections.

He added: "I wouldn't enter candidates if I was not.

"Labour have had a strong hold on Warrington for a long time – they are slipping now with candidates standing down within months of being elected.

"How many hats can these Labour councillors wear before they become ineffective?

"Lots seem to have multiple positions on various wards and then resign from parishes for some reason, mostly unexplained.

"UKIP, if elected, will offer the constituents of Burtonwood stability with its councillor.

"UKIP councillors throughout the country are renowned for their hard work on behalf of their constituency – UKIP Warrington will continue that effort in Burtonwood."
