RESIDENTS are worried that parked cars obstructing motorists on Farnworth Road in Penketh could lead to a fatal accident.

Councillors said they are looking into a solution to the problem, which frequently sees cars left on both sides of the road outside Penketh Court.

One resident said he witnessed vehicles swerving at speed between parked cars on the street and traffic problems have been reported since 2015, when the flats were newly opened.

Although no big collisions have been recorded on Farnworth Road since the housing was built, residents fear it is only a matter of time before a crash occurs.

Cllr David Keane (LAB) said he is in regular contact with the highways and housing departments about the issue and understands residents’ frustrations.

He said: “The council have now agreed to provide some additional on-site parking at Penketh Court which should reduce the need for on road parking.

“I still believe, and have argued since last year, that additional measures will be required such as parking restrictions or in fact a one-way system. The council have agreed to re-assess the situation after the extra parking has been provided.”

Parish councillor Sam Baxter (CON) said councillors will continue to work with residents to solve the problem.

“I know residents are frustrated and feel nobody actually wants this sorting,” he said.

“All councillors want to be able to deliver some good news but at the moment all we can do is relay what the officers come back to us with, and at the moment it's a work in progress.

“Rushing a planning decision caused the problem in the first place so to rush any solution out of the officers won't guarantee a thing.”
