THE judges have spoken and according to baking experts the tastiest donuts, croissants and loaves of bread are to be found in Morrisons in Stockton Heath.

Bakers at the Greenall's Avenue store had an unannounced visit from taste testers for the Baking Industry Awards who were impressed with the supermarket’s freshly made products.

Manager Debbie Kenwright, who has worked as a Morrisons baker for 22 years, said the team makes everything from scratch where many supermarkets bake pre-made frozen pastries.

She said the team were not flustered by the surprise visit: “We always work very hard. Both judges came into the store off the cuff and chatted to our apprentices.

“They looked at the quality of ingredients and the amounts of salt and sugar in our products.

“We’re baking throughout the day – it can be a sticky job sometimes! Customers can actually see you making the products and children are often really interested, they stand there watching through the glass.

“We prove everything and prepare it like you would at home and we’re all big fans of the Great British Bake Off.”

The team picked up the best in-store bakery of the year award at the Baking Industry Awards ceremony in London.
