THE Warrington South Labour group has congratulated Jeremy Corbyn on winning re-election as national party leader - despite backing rival Owen Smith.
Mr Corbyn was confirmed winner of a bitter campaign on Saturday in Liverpool.
Steve Wright, chairman of the Warrington South constituency Labour Party, said: "On behalf of Warrington South Constituency Labour Party I would like to congratulate Jeremy Corbyn on being re-elected leader of the party.
"Equally, I would like to recognise the sincerity and commitment of Owen Smith during what has been a long and hard fought campaign.
"This summer's leadership election has shown that there are deeply held convictions among the supporters of both candidates, but it was settled by a democratic process (unlike the Tory leadership!) and it is now time for our members to show unity and friendship.
"We will do everything we can to promote a positive spirit in the party here in Warrington. There is strong engagement with Labour politics locally, demonstrated by our growth to over 1000 full members in Warrington South.
"Our next All Member Meeting will take place at Bold St. Methodist Church Hall, Palmyra Square North, WA1 1JQ, on Friday, 7th October at 7.30pm, when we look forward to welcoming members old and new."
