AN URGENT appeal has been launched to raise vital funds to install an effective drainage system to preserve a churchyard in Culcheth which dates back to the 16th century.

Work is desperately needed at Newchurch Parish Church to prevent the historic site on Church Lane from becoming waterlogged.

Members of the church have called on the community for support after it was estimated that the cost of the work would be in the region of £35,000.

No stranger to water, Chris Jones moved from living within view of Lake Windermere in Cumbria to take up his new position as Rector of Newchurch Parish Church and Christ Church Croft.

But recently he has been forced to perform funerals in the churchyard while standing in up to six inches of water.

He said: “Our churchyard is an important part of the history and heritage of the village and something we need to cherish and preserve for this and future generations.

"Unlike many churches, the churchyard is still open to new burials and it is likely to remain so for many years to come.

"The installation of an effective drainage system is a major priority to maintain access and continued use of the churchyard.”

The land was extended in 1955 to provide additional space for the church.

This area was previously farmland and has no form of drainage

Newchurch Parish Church also plans to enhance the facilities for the many visitors who tend the graves of family and friends and for the wider community.

A Just Giving site has now been set up to collect donations.
