A ONE minute silence will be held on Tuesday in memory of those who lost their lives in the Summerland tragedy including Alan Barker from Fearnhead and Sean Kelly from Woolston.

The two friends died when a fire destroyed the £2m Summerland indoor entertainment and leisure complex on the Isle of Man on August 2, 1973.

The one minute silence will be held on the 43rd anniversary of the blaze on the prom walkway which is across from the former site.

Tina Brennen, who has campaigned tirelessly to make sure the events of that day are never forgotten, said: "I hope this will reach the families and friends of those killed and let them know they are very welcome to come along and to let them know their loved ones are not forgotten.

"So far as the status of the site, nothing has changed.

"It's still derelict and been for sale for almost 10 years.

"Last September I met with the minister of the department responsible for the site and he gave me his assurance he's committed to there being a memorial there - if only in temporary form for this summer until a permanent one can be placed there.

"But I'm disappointed to say this commitment hasn't been progressed and seems to have stalled."

A Summerland Memorial Concert is set to take place at Peel Centenary Centre on the Isle of Man on Saturday, August 6, from 7pm.
