THE Mayor was questioned over the 'legacy' he wants to leave in Warrington after making his first appearance on the town's community radio station since being sworn into office.

Last Wednesday, Radio Warrington celebrated broadcasting on 1332 AM/MW medium wave after being an online-only radio station for the past nine years.

An official relaunch party took place at the Town Hall and just 24 hours later Mayor Cllr Faisal Rashid (LAB – Chapelford and Old Hall) was quizzed about his role, as well as his plans and aspirations for the town, after starting his own regular slot – a Mayor's Question Time – on Radio Warrington.

Cllr Rashid had appeared on the station as deputy but it was his first time doing so since becoming the town's first Asian Mayor in May.

He said: "It was my first Mayor's Question Time but I am looking forward to having some more in the future – I am happy to make this a regular thing.

"I had a really good time and I enjoyed the questions from the people. I was questioned about the regeneration of the town, my vision for Warrington and the recent multicultural evening.

"And another one which stood out was a question about my legacy when I was asked about the legacy I would like to leave behind.

"There are a number of legacies I want to leave behind – a number of things are coming up throughout the mayoral year which I hope will have a positive impact on the town."

The station, which is run and staffed by volunteers, has been providing news and views for 24 hours a day on the internet since March 2007.

It moved its studios to Warrington Market last year.

Cllr Rashid was keen to praise all involved for their commitment.

He added: "In Warrington we have so many good volunteers – we can't do anything without them, hence the reason I am launching the Mayor's Achievement Awards.

"It is vital to recognise the residents and groups who do so much. It makes me feel so proud but not just as a councillor or as Mayor, as a resident of Warrington."
