WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones believes leadership challenger Owen Smith is 'just what Labour needs'.
Mr Smith, who launched his campaign on Sunday, is Jeremy Corbyn's only opponent after Angela Eagle withdrew from the race on Tuesday.
In a tweet Mrs Jones said she was 'glad' to see the Pontypridd MP put his name forward.
She added: "He is just what @UKLabour needs."
Labour Poulton with Fearnhead parish councillor Josh Booth responded to Mrs Jones' post on the social media platform.
He tweeted: "@HelenJonesMP Will you pledge not to split the party if Jeremy wins again, as Owen has?"

Shortly after, the MP replied to Cllr Booth.
She tweeted: "@MrJoshBooth I've been a member for over 40 years, my parents and grandparents were members. It's not people like me trying to split the party."
Cllr Booth then had the final say.
He said: "@HelenJonesMP Glad to hear it Helen, it's worrying hearing about MPs in talks with Tories/Lib Dems."
