WOLVES are “heading in the right direction”, boss Tony Smith says as he looks for more of the same ahead of the visit of Huddersfield Giants on Saturday, kick off 2pm.

Smith has named an unchanged 19-man squad for the game at The Halliwell Jones Stadium after all his players came through last weekend’s 42-26 win at Castleford Tigers unscathed.

Stand-off Kurt Gidley will be fit after sustaining a knock to the head, while prop Ryan Bailey looks set to continue playing despite a gallstones issue.

However, fellow front-rower Jordan Cox will remain on the sidelines as he recovers from a concussion picked up in the draw with Hull KR on July 1.

“It was a fatiguing game at Castleford, mainly because of the weather so we’ve had to be careful with what we’ve done with the guys in the warmer weather this week,” he said.

“We need to get their energy back up but we don’t think we’re going to be too much different this week in terms of people available to us and team selection.

“We haven’t been given the all-clear on Jordan just yet, he’s had a few concussions this year.

“He’s back in full training this week but he’s had a 14-day lay-off in terms of any physical work so we’re probably not going to rush him back this week.”

The Wire sit in third place but could finish top or second with a win over the bottom-placed Giants should rivals Wigan and Hull FC slip up on Friday night.

“We’re heading in the right direction and starting to get a bit of confidence about some of the things we’re doing but we certainly can’t take that for granted,” Smith said.

“It would be nice to get a few extra home games and we’re striving to finish as high as we can and that means improving and performing this week.

“We’re breathing down the necks of a couple of teams above us. While it’s not the ideal place to be we feel we’re in a pretty strong position.”

Should Wolves finish third, they will face home games against the fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth-placed sides in the Super 8s phase.

A second-placed finish will see them welcome the third, fourth, sixth and seventh-ranked teams to The Halliwell Jones Stadium, while finishing top will see them play the teams in second, third, fifth and sixth at home.

The full Super 8s fixtures will be revealed on Wednesday, three days before Wolves’ Challenge Cup semi-final clash with Wakefield at Leigh.
