A CARE home has been rated good by the Care Quality Commission after it came under fire when neglect was found in the care of a 75-year-old resident.

Callands Care Home was subject to an unannounced inspection by the CQC in March, who gave the Lydbury Close home an overall rating of good.

The inspection followed findings of neglect by Warrington Borough Council’s safeguarding adults unit, with one resident losing nearly a quarter of her body weight in two months at the home.

But inspectors were positive about the service, which provides personal and nursing care for up to 120 people with dementia, physical disabilities and nursing care needs.

A report published following the inspection said: “Staff had received training in regard to safeguarding vulnerable adults and were aware of the procedures to follow if abuse was suspected.

“The service was caring – people were treated with kindness, dignity and respect.

“People’s choices were respected and staff communicated and engaged with people in a compassionate and caring manner.”

Some residents and works were concerned about the levels of staffing and the use of agency staff though, and the CQC found that improvement was required in the home’s responsiveness.

The report added: “A number of people highlighted concerns regarding the range of activities available in the home.

“People told us that they felt there were insufficient activities on offer to meet the diverse needs and the number of people living at Callands Care Home.

“This information was also consistent with feedback received via surveys.”
