LAND in Dallam will be used to house up to 50 storage containers after the authority passed amended plans following concerns over 'dangerous' site access.

Planning chiefs gave applicant Entwistle Property the green light to begin its new operations on June 22 at the location bounded by Kerfoot Street, Folly Lane and Dallam Lane.

The initial proposal was to utilise the site for the 'open storage' of a single-tier of shipping containers with a maximum of 100 units.

But one businessman raised his concerns to planning officers after discovering the potential arrangements.

He said: "The traffic that uses this very short access road to Dallam Lane is already very dangerous at various times of the day because of traffic speeding through.

"The access to this land is on the bend of the road making it another traffic public safety issue that should be taken very seriously as mothers with children walk along this short access road to Dallam Lane."

But on June 2 applicant agent Richard Gee, from the Hamilton Gee Partnership, told the council there had been a rethink.

He said: "With regard to the proposed on-site operations, in light of these further questions my client has taken the opportunity to revisit their proposals.

"The first point to note is an amendment to the number of proposed containers – this has been reduced from 100 down to 50, still at a single level.

"Access to the site will now be further to the west on Kerfoot Street.

"Once delivered to the site during the construction phase of works, the operation no longer envisages the frequent off site transportation of units that would have allowed for their use off site, although it is accepted that the lack of permanent fixture would allow that.

"The containers would be used for storage and those renting a unit would have, via a keypad-controlled security gate, 24-hour a day, seven-day a week access."

As well as approving the proposals to use the land for 50 storage containers, the council also agreed with the site access submissions put forward.
