LABOUR'S Nick Bent is among 57 of the party's former parliamentary candidates calling on Jeremy Corbyn to resign as leader.

They have signed an open letter which indicates Labour would currently 'fail' in a general election and needs a leader who would be seen as a 'credible Prime Minister'.

Mr Bent, who has lost out in two Warrington South general election battles, said the main job of the leader is to become PM and to 'keep the Tories out of number 10'.

He added: "Only in power can Labour make Britain a fairer and more equal nation.

"It has become obvious that Jeremy Corbyn cannot win a general election, so Labour members must have a chance to elect a woman or man who can.

"Then we can unite around winning back Warrington South for Labour, plus scores of other similar Tory seats."

Mr Corbyn will face a vote of no confidence in his leadership later today, Tuesday, as party woes continue following the resignation of more than 50 frontbenchers.

On Sunday Warrington North MP Helen Jones tweeted to say she was 'sorry' to see MP Hilary Benn sacked from the shadow cabinet.

She labelled Mr Benn as 'one of the most decent people in politics' and said Labour 'needs people like him'.
